Ming Chi University of Technology Hosts Dragon Boat Festival Celebration—Migrant Workers Enjoy Making Rice Dumplings and Experiencing Taiwanese Tradition

update date : 2025-06-24

With the Dragon Boat Festival just around the corner, Ming Chi University of Technology held a special cultural event on May 25 to help migrant workers gain a deeper understanding of Taiwanese traditions. The university invited community volunteers Ms. Li Xiulan and Ms. Zheng Lin Guihua to lead a hands-on rice dumpling (zongzi) workshop for 15 migrant workers from Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Myanmar. In addition to learning how to wrap zongzi, participants were introduced to customs such as dragon boat racing and wearing fragrant sachets. They also had fun learning Taiwanese nursery rhymes, gaining a greater appreciation of local culture through cheerful interaction and cultural exchange.

The event was part of the university’s Mandarin language training program for migrant workers, organized in collaboration with the New Taipei City Department of Labor. By incorporating cultural experiences into language learning, the program helps participants strengthen both their communication skills and their understanding of daily life in Taiwan.

One participant, Patimah from Indonesia, works as a caregiver in Xinzhuang District. Encouraged by her employer, she spends her weekends attending Mandarin classes. She shared that she made two rice dumplings during the activity and found the process both fun and memorable. She hopes Ming Chi University will continue offering more workshops in the future.

As part of its long-standing commitment to University Social Responsibility (USR), Ming Chi University of Technology strives to create a diverse and inclusive environment on campus and in the community. Through sports, the arts, and cultural activities, the university supports migrant workers as they adapt to life in Taiwan. At the same time, these initiatives also give students and local residents opportunities to engage with different cultures, fostering mutual learning and building a strong foundation for a more inclusive society.
