update date : 2025-01-08

Ming Chi University of Technology's Department of Visual Communication Design Class of 2024 Achieves Remarkable Success: Under the guidance of Professor Chu Hsien-Che, students excelled in the "2024 TAIWAN TOP STAR" by winning the "Gold Award" in the Identification Design Category and the "Special Excellence Award" in the Poster Design Category.

The TAIWAN TOP STAR aims to encourage the development of Taiwanese design while broadening its global vision. Unlike international design competitions, this prestigious event focuses specifically on Taiwan's visual design excellence. This year's award ceremony was held on November 22 at The Grand Mayfull Hotel in Dazhi, Taipei.

The Gold Award-winning project, "Liminality", served as the main visual for this year’s graduation exhibition. The theme, "Liminality: the disintegration and rebirth of perception and thought," highlights the transitional phase during which people rethink, reevaluate, and reconstruct new orders and perspectives. It depicts a state where thoughts break apart and recombine, forming a renewed self despite constant transformation. This concept resonates throughout the graduation exhibition, inviting viewers to join the journey of rebirth.

In addition to the TAIWAN TOP STAR, "Liminality" also garnered recognition in international competitions, including being shortlisted in the "Communication Arts" Annual Awards and winning in the Graphic Design category at the "Creative Communication Award (C2A)".

The Special Excellence Award-winning project, "Weeds Chronicle," is another outstanding graduation work. It tells the story and highlights the value of wild weeds in Taiwanese cities. Some weeds serve as easily accessible food sources with stable supply and support the UN's Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #2: to end hunger and promote sustainable agriculture. Historically, weeds have been used for healing, as documented in Li Shizhen's "Compendium of Materia Medica." The project includes an illustrated booklet and a gift box showcasing the edibility and medicinal properties of weeds. Its goal is to change negative perceptions of weeds and promote their sustainable use.

"Weeds Chronicle" also received recognition beyond the TAIWAN TOP STAR, achieving honors such as the "Honorable Mention" at the 2024 DNA Paris Design Awards, "Merit" at the 2024 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (TISDC), and finalist status at the 2024 Communication Arts Annual Awards.

These achievements highlight the creative potential and innovative abilities of Ming Chi University's Visual Communication Design students. They not only bring prestige to the university and Professor Chu Hsien-Che but also underscore the university's excellence in cultivating top-tier design talent.
