On September 22nd, international and domestic students from Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) teamed up to host an English learning event at the Yumin Branch of New Taipei City Library. The event centered around the theme of gender equality and featured the students' original English story, Mission Impossible.
The story follows Miso, a girl who wins a school table tennis championship but faces challenges due to gender stereotypes. Ramen, the boy who placed second, couldn’t accept that a girl won and stole Miso’s trophy. In the end, with the help of her classmates, the truth is revealed, and Ramen admits his wrongdoing and returns the trophy. The story emphasizes the importance of gender equality and conveys that everyone, regardless of gender, has the right to compete and succeed equally.
In addition to the engaging storytelling session, the students taught children relevant English vocabulary such as “gasped,” “furious,” and “victim,” and led Art & Craft activity where the children made their own trophies, combining education with creativity.
This event is part of the 2024 USR Gender Equality (SDG 5) English Storytelling Service Program, led by MCUT’s Dean of International Affairs, Dr. Chieh-Lan. Li, The program fosters international collaboration, with MCUT students working alongside students from Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) in Malaysia and Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT) in Japan to create five original English stories related to gender equality. Mission Impossible is one of these collaborative projects. Through this multinational cooperation, the students not only deepened their understanding of gender equality but also enhanced their cross-cultural communication skills through English learning and storytelling.
The entire event successfully engaged the children in learning English through storytelling, interaction, and creative crafts, while also instilling the core values of gender equality.
