Ming Chi University’s “The Goal of University Education” Course Integrates Field-Based Learning to Guide Freshmen Through Action-Oriented Education
To support freshmen in adapting to university-level learning and to cultivate their understanding of society and the environment, The General Education Center of Ming Chi University of Technology continues to offer the required general education core course “The Goal of University Education” in the 2025 academic year. This one-credit compulsory course for first-year undergraduate students is designed to guide freshmen in exploring self-awareness and social engagement through structured course units and experiential learning activities at the beginning of their university journey.
Among the course components, the “Environment and Action” unit represents the most distinctive hands-on learning feature of the program. During the semester, a total of 42 field-based learning routes (including makeup sessions) were planned. Students were divided into small groups and participated in off-campus field visits during weekday evenings or weekends, led by external instructors, local cultural practitioners, or professionals with relevant expertise. Each route was designed around a specific theme and incorporated pre-activity briefings and post-activity discussions to help students consolidate their learning outcomes.
The field routes were developed in collaboration with local non-profit organizations, cultural and arts groups, community historians, and creative industry teams. Learning activities focused on environmental observation, local culture, and social issues, encouraging students to connect abstract concepts with real-world experiences. Through site visits, interaction, and guided discussions, students gained a deeper understanding of their surrounding environments and developed a clearer awareness of the relationship between public issues and everyday life.
The core objective of the “Environment and Action” unit extends beyond completing field activities. Instead, it emphasizes cultivating students’ abilities in observation, expression, and reflection. Through experiential learning, students are encouraged to link classroom knowledge with real-life contexts and gradually build foundational awareness of environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
In addition to the “Environment and Action” unit, the course also includes modules such as “Arts and Culture Engagement,” “Mindfulness Practice,” “Volunteer Service,” and “Beyond the Classroom.” These units offer a comprehensive learning experience covering artistic appreciation, self-awareness, community service, and independent learning.
As a foundational component of Ming Chi University’s general education curriculum, “The Goal of University Education” aims to support freshmen in establishing positive learning attitudes through a balanced approach combining practice and reflection. The course is designed to equip students with essential competencies needed for future academic development and meaningful participation in society.
