Free on-campus housing for MCUT students as tuition and fee reduction program for private schools taking effect in February

update date : 2024-02-20

To narrow the tuition gap between public and private institutions, the Executive Yuan has launched the “Program to Narrow the Tuition and Fee Gap Between Public and Private Schools and Its Supporting Measures,” starting in February, 2024. According to this program, students in the undergraduate programs of Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) will receive a subsidy of NT$17,500 per semester for tuition and fees. Additionally, they will also receive a subsidy for their on-campus accommodation, ranging from NT$5,000 to NT$7,000 per semester. Originally, the highest accommodation fee at MCUT was NT$5,000. Through the accommodation subsidy, students at MCUT no longer need to pay for their accommodation fees, making it the first university in Taiwan to offer free on-campus housing.

In addition to offering free on-campus accommodation, MCUT operates its student cafeteria in a manner that provides balanced diets at affordable prices, with three meals a day costing only NT$154. This allows students to enjoy meals at an economical price, reducing the financial burden on parents. Moreover, in order to attract outstanding talents, a variety of generous scholarship programs have been introduced, starting from the 2020-2021 academic year. In the 2023-2024 academic year, 427 students qualified for the honor scholarships, accounting for 45.57% of all new incoming students. Depending on the admission qualifications, students can receive up to NT$200,000 per semester in scholarships.

In recent years, universities and colleges have faced the impact of a declining birthrate, which has severely affected student recruitment. Many private institutions have encountered situations where the number of enrollees fell short of expectations. Every school has been trying their best to attract outstanding students. The Ministry of Education announced the registration rate for new students in the 2023-2024 academic year, with MCUT surpassing many national universities by achieving a full enrollment in all departments. The registration rate reached 100%, making it one of the few institutions to achieve such a rate and ranking it above other national universities.

Liu Feng-rui, the Academic Affairs Dean of MCUT, pointed out that in addition to generous honor scholarships, to nurture the next generation of talents, the school allocates at least 10% of tuition and fees each year for student scholarships and grants to assist underprivileged students in successfully completing their studies. Additionally, through the Honghu Project, the school offers support for economically disadvantaged students, including the Learning without Concerns Program, the Take-Off Course, and summer professional certification tutoring, to enhance their future competitiveness in the job market. The school actively addresses the current domestic talent shortage and responds to the gap between education and industry demands by investing significant resources, especially in the establishment of a junior year internship system. MCUT’s “Thick Sandwich” internship system allows students to engage in practical learning through a “school-company-school” approach. To provide students with more benefits, the school collaborates with Formosa Plastics Group to promote the “Formosa Plastics Scholarship Student” training program. Students who qualify as Formosa Plastics scholarship recipients will undergo training similar to “college new hires” and are given priority to become “intern engineers” with competitive industry salaries, holiday bonuses and direct employment opportunities with the company after graduation, achieving immediate employment.

MCUT adopts an “employment-oriented” approach as the core philosophy of its talent cultivation, offering a diverse professional faculty and advanced internationalized resources, thus creating a superior learning environment for students. At the same time, the school is committed to nurturing talents with practical and theoretical knowledge ready for immediate action, providing enterprises with a pool of excellent talent resources.
