“Embracing Diversity, Empowering Families” — MCUT Holds Forum on Multicultural Education and New Immigrant Support
Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT), in collaboration with the New Taipei City Education Department, hosted the 2nd Forum on New Immigrant Family Support and Multicultural Education. The forum invited five outstanding new immigrant language teachers, including award-winning Thai language instructor Lü Hsiao-Chao, to share their teaching experiences and personal journeys of adapting to life in Taiwan.
In the second session, two “second-generation and ASEAN youth” seed instructors, guided by Teacher Lee Ju-Pao, spoke about their growth experiences and dedication to promoting multicultural education. Their heartfelt stories reflected the passion and maturity of Taiwan’s young multicultural generation.
MCUT President Dr. Liu Tsu-Hua shared that his own family represents a successful example of cultural integration—being of mixed Zhejiang and Minnan descent, and with a foreign son-in-law. He emphasized that multiculturalism is a natural part of human development and that MCUT is deeply committed to social inclusion and Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy, aiming to nurture globally minded talents.
New immigrant teachers such as Lü Hsiao-Chao (Thai) and Huang Pao-Yun (Malay), who have lived in Taiwan for over 20 years, shared their early struggles adapting to a new environment and their enduring passion for multicultural education, even volunteering without pay. Their moving life stories deeply touched the audience.
In the second part of the forum, young seed instructors from the New Second Generation and ASEAN Youth Association—both university students—shared their experiences of cultural advocacy. Despite their young age, their diverse backgrounds have shaped their maturity and strengthened their desire to serve as role models for other second-generation youths.
Dr. Pu Yen-Kuang, Director of MCUT’s General Education Center, highlighted that New Taipei City has the largest new immigrant population in Taiwan, making family support and children’s education critical issues. Through its USR (University Social Responsibility) Project, MCUT has long collaborated with local schools and libraries to improve bilingual teaching materials, create multicultural picture books, and encourage second-generation youth to share their voices. Dr. Pu emphasized that understanding and embracing diversity is key to nurturing Taiwan’s next generation of global leaders.
