Dunlin College Explores Leadership Through the Legacy of Ming Chi’s Founder
Ming Chi University of Technology’s Dunlin Academy organized the “The Enduring Spirit: A Journey into the Founder’s Legacy” on August 27, 2026, leading students to visit the Formosa Plastics Museum. Through an exploration of the life and career of Wang Yung-Ching, founder of the Formosa Plastics Group and Ming Chi University of Technology, the visit encouraged students to reflect on the mindset and qualities required of leaders when facing challenges, changes, and social responsibilities. As the founder of Ming Chi University of Technology, Wang’s educational philosophy and commitment to talent development have had a lasting influence on the university. The visit therefore provided students with an opportunity to revisit the university’s founding spirit while exploring the qualities of effective leadership.
The activity began with a gathering at the first floor of the university gymnasium, followed by a bus ride to the Formosa Plastics Museum. Upon arrival, the students first took part in a guided tour around Chih-Ching Lake, where they explored the natural surroundings and developed their observational skills and awareness of their environment through interaction with their peers. The students then visited the Formosa Plastics Museum, where three professional docents guided them in separate groups. Through historical materials, exhibits, and guided explanations, students learned about the establishment and development of Formosa Plastics Group, as well as Wang Yung-Ching’s approach to business and life. His qualities of diligence, pragmatism, continuous improvement, and willingness to take responsibility provided students with valuable perspectives on how leaders approach challenges and lead teams.
During the museum tour, students also learned about Formosa Plastics Group’s long-term involvement in education, healthcare, social welfare, and environmental initiatives. These examples demonstrated that leadership involves not only pursuing organizational growth, but also recognizing and responding to responsibilities toward society. Through these real-world cases, students were encouraged to consider questions such as how leaders make decisions, take responsibility, and respond to social needs. The experience enabled them to connect the lessons of corporate leadership with their own academic development and future aspirations, thereby deepening their understanding of leadership.
Combining experiential learning, historical exploration, and leadership reflection, the activity provided students with an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and examine leadership through the life and legacy of the university’s founder. Dunlin College is committed to cultivating students’ leadership competencies through diverse learning experiences, encouraging them to develop a sense of responsibility, collaboration, initiative, critical thinking, and social awareness. Through this visit, students were encouraged to transform their insights into action and apply what they learned to future academic pursuits, teamwork, and career development, gradually becoming responsible and influential young leaders.
