Taiwan's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Fire Rescue, Investigation, and Hydrogen Safety Workshop Promotes Cross-Sector Collaboration for Safer Hydrogen Transportation
The New Taipei City Fire Department, in collaboration with Ming Chi University of Technology, Nan Yang Motor Co., Ltd., and Asia Hydrogen Energy Corporation, jointly organized Taiwan's first "Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Fire Rescue, Investigation, and Hydrogen Safety Workshop" on June 16, 2026, at the Innovation Building of Ming Chi University of Technology. Representatives from fire departments across Taiwan were invited to participate in the event, which combined fire rescue demonstrations, accident-investigation experience sharing, hydrogen safety seminars, and live vehicle demonstrations to enhance emergency responders' professional capabilities in handling incidents involving hydrogen-powered vehicles.
As global efforts toward net-zero emissions continue to accelerate, hydrogen energy is increasingly recognized as one of the key solutions for low-carbon transportation. The workshop commenced with a hydrogen fuel cell bus fire rescue exercise, simulating emergency response scenarios and demonstrating command procedures, hazard control measures, and rescue operations for incidents involving next-generation energy vehicles.
The program also featured a series of technical presentations, including "Analysis of Onboard Systems for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses," "Characteristics and Safe Use of Hydrogen Fuel Cells," and "Hydrogen Technology Development and Storage Safety." The sessions covered topics such as vehicle system architecture, fuel cell operating principles, hydrogen storage technologies, safety regulations, and accident case studies, providing participants with comprehensive insights into hydrogen-powered transportation technologies.
The workshop further highlighted international developments in hydrogen bus deployment. According to the technical presentations, South Korea deployed nearly 1,700 hydrogen fuel cell buses in commercial operation between 2019 and 2024, accumulating more than 23 million kilometers of service mileage. These achievements demonstrate the growing maturity and scalability of hydrogen-powered public transportation systems. Hydrogen fuel cell buses offer advantages such as extended driving range and rapid refueling capability, making them a promising option for reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
The organizers emphasized that while hydrogen technologies play an important role in energy transition and decarbonization efforts, establishing robust safety management and emergency response mechanisms is equally critical. Through collaboration among fire departments, industry partners, and academic institutions, the workshop served as a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and professional training. It is expected to strengthen Taiwan's preparedness for emerging energy vehicle incidents and support the safe, resilient, and sustainable development of hydrogen transportation. of hydrogen transportation in the future.
