MCUT Sustainability Week Visits Formosa Plastics Yangmei Organic Eco Farm
As part of Ming Chi University of Technology’s 2026 Sustainability Week Series, faculty and staff visited Formosa Plastics Yangmei Organic Eco Farm on April 24 to participate in the “Yangmei Farm Handmade Trail Tour and Organic Farm Experience.” Although it rained on the day of the event, the weather did not dampen the enthusiasm of the participants. Wearing raincoats and holding umbrellas, they walked into the farm and immersed themselves in the soil and natural surroundings, experiencing the gentle breeze, moist land, and the connection between nature and the five senses.
The activity centered on the first handmade natural trail at Yangmei Organic Farm. Associate Manager Liu from FPG’s General Administration guided the participants in learning about the trail’s design concept, the use of natural materials, and eco-friendly construction methods. The trail was built with environmentally friendly materials such as wood, stones, and fallen branches, and was planned in accordance with the terrain and surrounding vegetation to minimize disturbance to the existing environment. As a result, the trail serves not only as a walking path, but also as a field for nature appreciation, ecological observation, and environmental education.
During the guided tour, participants walked along the trail and irrigation channels, observing farm plants and the surrounding environment while learning how trail construction can balance pedestrian access with ecological needs. Through on-site interpretation, they gained a deeper understanding of the design principles behind an eco-friendly trail and how it should coexist with surrounding vegetation, insects, and soil environments. As rain fell between the trail and the forest, participants were able to more directly experience the cycles of nature and the vitality of the land.
In addition to the trail tour, the activity also included an organic farming and vegetable harvesting experience. Participants entered the fields to learn about organic farming practices and crop-growing environments. From observing crops and identifying vegetables to harvesting them by hand, participants experienced the journey of food from farm to table through hands-on agricultural practice. They also gained a deeper understanding of the relationship among eco-friendly agriculture, land conservation, and daily food choices. Despite the continuing rain, the event was filled with laughter and interaction. Through working with soil and rain, participants experienced the authenticity of labor and demonstrated MCUT’s spirit of diligence, simplicity, and active participation.
Moving forward, MCUT will continue to integrate on- and off-campus sustainability fields to promote more hands-on, educational, and participatory sustainability activities. Through these efforts, sustainability will become more than an idea; it will become a visible, experiential, and continuously practiced part of daily life for faculty, staff, and students.
