Bridging Language Barriers: Chinese Language Learning Program for International Students

update date : 2026-05-08

In response to the growing trend of globalization, MCUT is actively expanding its international presence. We are committed to fostering a welcoming and inclusive academic environment to attract outstanding scholars from around the world. To assist international students in overcoming language barriers, facilitating their seamless integration into local life in Taiwan, and promoting profound cultural dialogue, the university has specially designed a series of Chinese language courses. At its core, this initiative goes beyond mere linguistic instruction; it aims to build a sense of belonging within Taiwanese society through cultural exchange, ultimately helping students broaden their international perspectives and cultivate deep humanities literacy.

Led by a team of highly experienced and professional instructors, this program offers intensive 10-week courses with one 2-hour session per week, tailored to various proficiency levels. The curriculum integrates the instructors' specialized expertise, featuring diverse themes such as Chinese conversation, written composition, and Taiwanese folklore and festivals. The program is structured into three distinct levels:

First, Level 1 (Foundational) is designed for absolute beginners. The teaching focus lies in the precise mastery of Zhuyin (Bopomofo) and Hanyu Pinyin, complemented by tonal variation practice. This level assists students in building fundamental listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for Chinese characters, enabling them to handle basic daily communication.

Second, Level 2 (Intermediate) targets students who have completed the foundational level or possess equivalent proficiency. At this stage, students typically have a vocabulary of approximately 1,400 to 1,800 words. The curriculum guides students through more complex sentence structures and grammatical frameworks, enhancing their fluency when communicating with native speakers and enabling them to read straightforward news articles.

Furthermore, for students with career development or advanced study goals, a TOCFL/Chinese Certification Intensive Class is provided. This course is strictly exam-oriented, utilizing systematic pre-exam reviews and mock tests to strengthen test-taking strategies and help students successfully obtain professional certifications.

Regarding pedagogy, we firmly believe that “the key to language learning is speaking.” Therefore, instructors employ a step-by-step approach, beginning with slow and clear articulation to guide students through vocabulary pronunciation, ensuring every student has the confidence to speak. This is followed by situational dialogue exercises where students apply newly learned vocabulary and patterns in real-time interactions. This “learning by doing” approach ensures that students can practically apply what they learn, significantly boosting their motivation to master the Chinese language.
