update date : 2026-03-17

The Spring Festival Calligraphy and Couplets-Giving Event in Taishan District, New Taipei City, was held on the morning of the 24th at the municipal historic site Dingtaishan Temple.

Chairman Li Chiu-yi of Dingtaishan Temple, together with Legislator Hung Meng-kai, City Councilors Sung Ming-tsung and Li Yu-hsiang, Taishan District Chief Lin Chun-hung, Superintendent Huang Jui-jen of Fu Jen Catholic University Hospital, Vice President Ma Cherng-min of Ming Chi University of Technology, and principals from six junior high and elementary schools in Taishan, each wrote representative characters for the phrase "In the Bingwu Year, galloping horses welcome the New Year; the fragrance of ink spreads blessings and auspiciousness."

Student representatives from grades 4 to 9 in Taishan's elementary and junior high schools also took part in the calligraphy activity, collectively writing the fifteen-character phrase "Galloping Horses Welcome the New Year; Fortune and Blessings Arrive—Calligraphy Spring Couplets for the Community."

Chairman Li Chiu-yi stated that calligraphy is an important cultural art form, and writing Spring Festival couplets is a distinctive Lunar New Year tradition. Encouraging students to practice calligraphy not only allows younger generations to engage with this art but also helps preserve and promote the tradition. On the same day, the Fo Guang Shan Taishan Chan Pure Land Center shared Laba porridge with visitors as a gesture of goodwill, spreading festive warmth, while the Miracle Home of the Catholic Church organized a charity sale to raise funds to care for elderly people, demonstrating religious groups' dedication to community service and social care.

Vice President Ma Cherng-min of Ming Chi University of Technology noted that the calligraphy couplets-giving event not only showcases the beauty of traditional calligraphy but also provides local students with the opportunity to participate and experience the meaning of cultural inheritance through hands-on writing. Ming Chi University of Technology has long been committed to supporting local cultural development. By collaborating with Dingtaishan Temple and community organizations, the university continues to promote cultural education and public welfare initiatives. Through the promotion of calligraphy and Spring Festival couplets, the university hopes to inspire more young people to appreciate and cherish traditional culture while bringing warmth and cultural vitality to the community.

The event at Dingtaishan Temple also featured performances by a drum ensemble and a Chinese orchestra. Calligraphy instructor Chen Chang-fu from the Taiwan Visiting Mountains Youxin Calligraphy Association led students in writing Spring Festival couplets for the public. He explained that the association has collaborated with Dingtaishan Temple on this event for more than a decade, and this year marks the second time students have participated in the "student calligraphy relay" activity. Chen expressed his hope that more young people will learn calligraphy and help carry forward traditional culture. In particular, he emphasized that in today's high-tech era, calligraphy can help balance the mind and body while cultivating patience and emotional stability.
