Ming Chi University of Technology Strengthens Environmental Education by Promoting Tamsui River Kayak Ecological Exploration Activity

update date : 2024-12-12

To promote environmental education and enhance public awareness of the ecological significance of the Tamsui River basin, Ming Chi University of Technology collaborated with industry, government, and academic partners to organize the "Tamsui River Kayak Ecological Exploration Activity." A total of 24 participants joined the event, which combined hands-on experiences with professional guided tours to gain an in-depth understanding of the biodiversity and ecological conditions of the Tamsui River.

This activity integrated environmental education into its curriculum, using kayaks as the main vehicle for exploration. Starting from the Bali section of the Tamsui River, participants observed a variety of waterbirds, fish species, and riparian vegetation along the way. Professional guides provided detailed explanations about the river's history and local ecological environment, including how to identify different species and understand the impact of human activities on river ecosystems.

Chen Chih-Lin, a faculty member of Ming Chi University’s environmental education program, remarked, "The Tamsui River is not only a vital waterway for the Taipei area but also a home to many species. Through activities like this, we hope participants will develop a deeper appreciation for our natural environment and learn to take concrete actions to protect it."

During the event, participants also engaged in river cleanup efforts, collecting floating debris and documenting the types and quantities of waste. These records were shared with relevant authorities as reference for environmental management. An NGO partner commented, "Maintaining river environments requires collaboration among governments, academic institutions, and local communities. Through cross-sector cooperation like this, we believe we can achieve greater positive change."

Looking ahead, Ming Chi University plans to continue collaborating with local communities to design more environmental education courses centered on the Tamsui River basin, encouraging broader attention to the sustainable development of local ecosystems.
