The Ministry of Education's University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative focuses on fostering community connections, talent development, and international engagement. It encourages universities to actively participate in addressing societal issues and to play pivotal roles in driving meaningful change.
At Ming Chi University of Technology, the Center for General Education offers the "University Way" fieldwork course, comprising 42 thematic lessons. These courses invite local experts and scholars as instructors to lead students beyond the campus and into the community. By prioritizing human-centric approaches and addressing local needs, the program integrates humanistic care and technological innovation to tackle regional challenges, thereby fulfilling social responsibilities and striving for the sustainable advancement of the USR framework.
One such course, "Art Together! Intergenerational Creative Arts," brought together six artists from the New Taipei City Taishan Arts Association to collaborate with 60 first-year students. Emphasizing the connection between artistic aesthetics and life experiences, the course introduced students to the art of ink wash painting on rice paper. Through cross-departmental teamwork, students created 2-meter-long scrolls depicting Taishan's local cultural landscapes.
The artworks are now proudly displayed in the central corridor of the Innovation Building on the university's first floor, from October 24 (Thursday) to November 2 (Saturday).
Lin, a student from the Department of Environmental Safety and Health Engineering, reflected on the experience:
"Collaborating with everyone on a single artwork allowed me to truly feel the power of teamwork. Each person's creativity interwove on the canvas, enriching the piece. This experience not only enhanced my appreciation for art but also strengthened mutual understanding and forged deeper friendships."
