Flipping Everyday Biases with Respect! Ming Chi University of Technology Responds to Gender Equality Education Day by Actively Practicing Diversity and Inclusion
In response to Taiwan's Gender Equality Education Day, Ming Chi University of Technology invited Professor Mong-Hwa King from the Institute of Technology Law at NYCU to deliver a keynote lecture titled "Legal Rights of Diverse Genders and Anti-Discrimination" on April 20, 2026. The lecture aimed to help faculty and staff better understand gender diversity and enhance their awareness of the Gender Equality Education Act and the Gender Equity in Employment Act, working together to foster a campus environment that respects differences.
During his presentation, Professor King emphasized that the core concept of gender diversity is "not viewing gender through a single, binary, or stereotyped lens." He provided an in-depth analysis of the legal definitions of gender characteristics, gender identity, and sexual orientation. He also reminded the audience of the unique nature of educational environments, noting that the Gender Equality Education Act mandates a "24-hour reporting obligation." He stressed that once any staff member becomes aware of a suspected gender-related incident on campus, they must report it to the designated school personnel and competent authorities within 24 hours. Prompt reporting is mandatory and concealing evidence is strictly prohibited; he further illustrated the irreversible consequences of failing to report using real-world case studies.
Regarding administrative practices, Professor King proposed the principle of "administrative minimalism." He suggested that campus systems and communication should prioritize the titles and pronouns preferred by the individuals involved. Unless absolutely necessary for official business, staff should refrain from inquiring about an individual's sex assigned at birth or medical history, and under no circumstances should anyone's privacy be treated as casual conversation. In addition, the lecture explored the optimization of campus spaces, such as installing gender-friendly restrooms and introducing flexible dormitory arrangements. He noted that the key is to provide "systems that allow individuals to be treated with respect," rather than enforcing a single, rigid standard.
The MCUT Personnel Office stated that the university will continue to promote gender awareness, integrate gender equality perspectives into school policies, and fulfill its long-term goals of ensuring campus safety and gender equity.
