update date : 2026-01-26

To promote campus internationalization and deepen cross-national exchange in design education, the Department of Visual Communication Design at Ming Chi University of Technology held the “Van Lang–MCUT Cross-National Design Workshop” from December 8 to December 12, 2025. Faculty members and students from Van Lang University in Vietnam were invited to Taiwan to participate in a five-day intensive program combining course exchanges and hands-on design practice, fostering in-depth interaction in design education, cultural understanding, and academic collaboration.

The workshop was structured around the core theme of “The Development of Visual Communication Design and Cross-Cultural Applications.” On the first day, Professor Miao-Hsien Chuang from Ming Chi University of Technology delivered a departmental presentation and keynote talk, introducing trends in visual communication design, the department’s teaching, and future development directions, along with an admissions briefing and discussion session. In the afternoon, Professor Thai from Van Lang University presented a lecture on service design and community design, guiding students to reflect on the role of design through real-world case studies and social and cultural contexts.

Throughout the workshop, a series of cultural experiences and field visits were arranged, including trips to Sanxia Old Street, Tamsui Old Street, and Jiufen Old Street. Through on-site observation and group discussions, visiting students gained a deeper understanding of local Taiwanese culture, everyday lifestyles, and design applications. Mixed groups of students from both universities shared course experiences and design perspectives, further cultivating cross-cultural communication skills and teamwork abilities.

The later stage of the workshop focused on consolidating and presenting design outcomes. Student groups organized their concepts and prepared presentations, which were showcased during the final presentation session. Faculty members from both institutions provided professional critiques and feedback, while discussions were also held on community revitalization themes and the potential future applications of design, serving as a foundation for continued collaboration and exchange.

Approximately 30 participants took part in the workshop, including one faculty member and 16 students from Van Lang University, as well as 13 faculty members and students from Ming Chi University of Technology. Students from the Department of Visual Communication Design with diverse national backgrounds also contributed to the planning and execution of the event, demonstrating the department’s achievements in international learning and multicultural exchange. Through this collaboration, the academic partnership between the two universities was strengthened, the department’s international visibility was enhanced, and a solid foundation was established for future overseas recruitment, student exchanges, and long-term cooperation.
