MCUT International Conference on Technology and Teaching: Japanese and Korean Scholars Gather for Lectures

update date : 2026-01-20

The Department of Industrial Design at Ming Chi University of Technology recently hosted the 2025 Ming Chi University of Technology International Conference on Technology and Teaching, attracting over one hundred scholars and students from Taiwan and abroad.

According to Professor Chun-Ming Yang, Chair of the Department of Industrial Design, the conference is organized by the department and has been held continuously for more than thirty years since its inception in 1986, making it one of the longest-running academic conferences in the field of design in Taiwan. In pursuit of the vision of internationalizing design education, the conference was renamed an international conference in 2015, and its scale has since expanded with continued invitations to scholars from both Taiwan and overseas.

The conference program consists of two main components: paper presentations and expert keynote speeches. Academic researchers and design practitioners from related fields presented their research achievements from the past year within their areas of expertise. The primary objective of the International Conference on Technology and Teaching is to further promote academic research in design, strengthen scholarly exchange, and enhance industry–academia collaboration. Each year, academic experts are invited to participate, with the aim of providing a two-way platform for communication and exchange between practitioners and researchers in design-related fields. Through sharing academic research and practical experience, the conference fosters exchange, observation, and learning, enabling the integration of design practice and theory.

Design innovation has long been a key goal pursued across industries. Through production technologies or exploratory processes addressing economic activities and social issues, design innovation creates new added value; expands or renews products, services, and markets; develops new production methods; and establishes corresponding management systems. Design innovation not only seeks refined outcomes but also represents a process of cross-disciplinary collaboration. As Taiwan has entered an era of highly specialized division of labor, it is increasingly necessary to rely on the connective power of design innovation to strengthen industry’s ability to respond to emerging issues and generate added value. In response to global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the conference also explores how design innovation can effectively link appropriate fields of expertise to produce meaningful and effective new solutions, thereby enhancing international industrial competitiveness.

This year’s conference was co-organized under the guidance of the Taiwan Society of Kansei Engineering, with strong support from its President, Meng-Tsung Cheng. Distinguished keynote speakers were invited, including Professor Kim Seung-June, Vice Dean of the College of Design and Architecture at the University of Ulsan, Korea, and Associate Professor Akiyoshi Inasaka from the Department of Design Science, Graduate School of Creative Engineering, Chiba Institute of Technology, Japan. Participants included faculty and students from National Taipei University of Technology, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Ming Chuan University, Tatung University, and other institutions. The keynote lectures, titled “Sustainable Design (Education) in the Age of Generative AI: The Critical Role of Intuitive Design” and “Emotion in Human Motion: My Research Challenge in the AI and Physical Era,” introduced the latest international trends in integrating AI into design. The Q&A sessions were highly interactive, with international students raising questions in English, creating lively and engaging discussions.
