Connecting Campus and Community: Dunlin Academy Volunteers at the Ding Tai Shan Temple Celebration
On November 7, 2025, Dunlin Academy of Ming Chi University of Technology visited Ding Tai Shan Temple, a significant religious and cultural site in the Taishan area, to participate in volunteer services during a local religious celebration. This activity served as a key practical component following the academy’s tour guide volunteer training program. Through hands-on community service, students were able to translate their prior learning into concrete action, further deepening their understanding of local religious beliefs and cultural heritage.
The Ding Tai Shan Temple celebration attracted a large number of devotees and members of the public. Students from Dunlin Academy worked collaboratively according to the needs of the event, assisting with crowd guidance, order maintenance, guest reception, and environmental upkeep. Faced with heavy crowds and a fast-paced event schedule, the students demonstrated strong adaptability and teamwork. Their friendly and proactive service attitude contributed to the smooth operation of the event and left a positive impression on participants, who experienced the students’ enthusiasm and professionalism.
Serving as volunteers in a religious celebration involved not only physical effort, but also the opportunity to understand local culture, respect traditional beliefs, and learn how to interact with diverse community groups. Through this experience, students gained deeper insight into the role and significance of religious faith in local life, as well as a greater appreciation of the important place Ding Tai Shan Temple holds in Taishan’s religious and cultural landscape. Religious celebrations are not merely ritual performances, but vital platforms for fostering local connections and strengthening community bonds.
Dunlin Academy hopes that service-learning activities such as this will cultivate students’ sense of social responsibility and encourage active participation in public affairs. By engaging in real-world settings, students develop skills in communication, coordination, task allocation, and on-site problem-solving, while building confidence and a strong sense of responsibility through practical action. This one-day volunteer service not only provided students with valuable hands-on experience, but also promoted positive interaction between the university and the local community, demonstrating the university’s commitment to community engagement and social participation.
