Dunlin Academy Docent Training Begins! Deepening Understanding of the Culture of Ming Zhi Academy
Ming Chi University of Technology’s Dunlin Academy held the course “The First Academy in Northern Taiwan—An Introduction to the History and Culture of Ming Zhi Academy (明志書院) ” on October 14, 2025 (Year 114) as an important component of its tour-guide volunteer training program. Through the guidance of a professional instructor, students of Dunlin Academy gained an in-depth understanding of the significant historical and cultural assets of the Taishan area, laying a solid foundation for their future involvement in community service.
The course specially invited Professor Lin Shu-Chen, a standing committee member of Ming Zhi Academy(明志書院), to give the lecture. Starting with the historical role of the “First Academy in Northern Taiwan,” Professor Lin introduced the developmental history of Ming Zhi Academy(明志書院) in both Taishan and Hsinchu, as well as the profound contributions of three distinguished figures—Hu Zhuo-You, Guo Zong-Jia, and Hu Bang-Han—to the academy’s establishment and continuation. She also explained the meanings of various official titles in the Qing administrative system, such as huli (acting administrator), tongzhi (assistant magistrate), and jianshu (acting concurrently), and further shared insights into the academy’s restoration project, which upholds the principle of “restoring the old as it was,” along with its future prospects.
Through this cultural and historical course, Dunlin Academy students not only strengthened their understanding of local cultural heritage but also accumulated essential knowledge for future roles in tour-guide volunteering, community events, and ceremonial services. It is hoped that the students will apply what they have learned to promote local culture, deepen the connection between the campus and the community, and jointly contribute to cultural preservation and public service.
