Cross-Cultural Expertise Enters Long-Term Care: Ming Chi University of Technology and Miracle Home Create Beautiful Portraits for Seniors
Ming Chi University of Technology visited Miracle Home, operated by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, on September 16 and 17, leading members of its Photography Club to provide professional portrait photography services for elderly residents. The initiative integrated the results of the university’s New Immigrant Hairdressing Training Program, inviting skilled new immigrant and migrant worker participants to offer complimentary haircuts and grooming. This collaboration showcased the power of cross-cultural learning and community care, allowing seniors to preserve dignified and joyful moments through portrait photography.
Ming Chi University of Technology has long committed to new immigrant empowerment, particularly through vocational programs such as its hairdressing course, which equips learners with foundational haircutting skills and strengthens workplace readiness. The event served as a meaningful extension of this training, as program participants applied their newly acquired skills to style seniors’ hair and enhance their appearance before photography sessions. Meanwhile, Photography Club students managed professional lighting and composition to capture each senior’s confidence, warmth, and personal story, turning the experience into a memorable and emotionally resonant portrait session.
The atmosphere at the venue was heartwarming. After receiving grooming and styling, many seniors expressed delight and gratitude, interacting cheerfully with volunteers and sharing life experiences. The service team also provided careful support throughout the process, assisting seniors with posture, personal grooming, and overall comfort, ensuring a dignified and reassuring environment. Several seniors noted that professional portrait services are rare in their daily lives, and this activity not only refreshed their appearance but also gifted them a treasured life keepsake.
Through hairdressing and photography services, the program deepened cross-cultural engagement and facilitated meaningful human connections. New immigrant and migrant worker participants transformed their skills into acts of care, cultivating confidence and a sense of belonging, while student photographers strengthened their technical abilities and social awareness through hands-on community service. The event demonstrated not only aesthetic value but also the spirit of inclusion, empathy, and mutual support, building a warmer and more understanding community environment.
Ming Chi University of Technology emphasized its commitment to continuing its educational and community service mission, connecting students, new immigrant learners, and local organizations to promote multicultural engagement and shared service initiatives. The university plans to expand future cross-disciplinary collaborations, further cultivating young talent and new immigrant contributors, advancing cultural inclusion, and fostering a compassionate and supportive society. Through sustained engagement, the university aspires to accompany more seniors and families, ensuring that every smile and memory is cherished and preserved.
