Ming Chi Indigenous Youth Club Collaborates with Taishan Community to Promote Cultural Exchange
To foster cultural exchange, community engagement, and the continuation of indigenous heritage, the Indigenous Youth Club of Ming Chi University of Technology collaborated with the Taishan indigenous community to conduct a series of interactive cultural activities. The program included natural cleaning product workshops for local elders, fishnet weaving skill learning sessions, and joint participation in an indigenous traditional dance performance.
During the natural cleaning product workshop, student members worked together with community elders. Rather than a one-sided teaching approach, the activity encouraged mutual sharing, allowing both students and elders to learn from one another. This exchange created a warm intergenerational learning environment while promoting environmentally friendly daily practices.
In addition, students had the opportunity to learn traditional fishnet weaving guided by community members. This skill, which carries cultural memory and ancestral knowledge, provided students with hands-on experience in understanding the meaning of heritage preservation. Through this interaction, students recognized the importance of respecting and valuing indigenous cultural knowledge.
The collaboration culminated in a joint traditional dance performance preparation. Students and community members practiced together, shared cultural narratives, coordinated outfits, and worked through choreography as a team. This not only strengthened cultural identity among youth but also deepened the emotional connection between the university and the local indigenous community.
The Indigenous Youth Club expressed that this series of activities demonstrated the value of community-based cultural education. The club hopes to continue long-term partnerships with the Taishan community, enhance cultural awareness, and promote sustainable development of indigenous traditions.
