Exploring Technology and Culture! The 2024 Hong Kong High School Engineering & Design Camp

update date : 2025-03-13

From December 21 to December 28, 2024, Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) successfully hosted the "2024 Hong Kong High School Engineering and Cultural Experience Camp" and the "2024 Hong Kong High School Art and Design Cultural Experience Camp" in collaboration with Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2 from Hong Kong. A total of 34 teachers and students traveled to Taiwan to participate in this enriching eight-day learning camp.

The Engineering Camp was jointly planned by multiple departments, including Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Safety Health and Environmental Engineering. The camp provided a diverse and professional learning experience, where students engaged in hands-on activities such as operating robotic arms and drones for mission challenges, applying Python for machine learning, designing and implementing IoT applications, experiencing 3D printing technology, constructing catapults and wind-up cars, conducting chemistry experiments, and crafting everyday items through DIY activities. The interdisciplinary collaboration among different departments ensured a well-rounded and immersive learning experience for the students.

Meanwhile, the Design Camp was organized by the Department of Industrial Design, Department of Visual Communication Design, and the Program in Digital Marketing. The curriculum emphasized professional skill development, with a special focus on Taiwan's tea culture. Students explored various cultural sites, including Yilan, Maokong, and the Formosa Plastics Group Museum, drawing inspiration from these visits to incorporate into their artistic creations and design concepts. On December 27, the participants showcased their creative works in a final presentation, highlighting their innovative achievements. Additionally, MCUT students were specially assigned as learning companions to foster cross-cultural friendships and enhance mutual cultural exchange.

MCUT Vice President Dr. Cherng-Min Ma expressed his gratitude to all participating students for choosing MCUT as their platform for learning and exchange. He hoped that they would leave with valuable knowledge and fond memories, and looked forward to welcoming them again next year for even more exciting educational and cultural exchange opportunities.

Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2 Director Ms. Leung-Ying Yam extended heartfelt appreciation to MCUT for the meticulous planning and professional execution of the camp, from pre-event preparations to course design. She expressed her commitment to promoting this program among other Catholic diocesan schools in Hong Kong, with the hope of encouraging more students to participate in the future.

The successful execution of this program exemplifies MCUT’s commitment to local internationalization, fostering cultural exchange and broadening students' global perspectives. Furthermore, it strengthens the university’s collaboration with high schools in Hong Kong, deepening educational ties between Taiwan and Hong Kong and enhancing MCUT’s international reputation.
