Ming Chi University of Technology has captured acclaim this year with its documentary, Listening to the Silent Wails of Rivers and Seas: A Rapid River Waste Screening Investigation. The film, which chronicles major northern rivers using quantitative data to highlight the escalating problem of river waste, earned high praise from the jury at the “2024 Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival”—taking home the “Sustainable Microfilm Bronze Award.” Vice President C. M. Ma of Ming Chi attended the award ceremony on August 9 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1, where the honor was formally bestowed.
The award ceremony was held during the 2024 Third Asia-Pacific Sustainability Expo (2024 SDG Asia), organized by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE). The expo, which ran from August 8 to 10 at Taipei World Trade Center Hall 1, featured the theme “Tide, Sustainability” and brought together central and local government agencies, businesses, educational institutions, NGOs, and international organizations. In addition to hosting a Sustainability Summit and Forum, the event also included the award ceremony for the “2024 Eighth Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival”—with a total of 94 organizations and 183 entries participating, thereby boosting public engagement on sustainability issues and reinforcing the message of sustainable development.
The documentary Listening to the Silent Wails of Rivers and Seas: A Rapid River Waste Screening Investigation documents the journey of the “2023 Tamsui River Waste Rapid Screening Investigation Project,” a collaborative effort by Ming Chi University of Technology, the Wild Protection Association, and Fubon Life Insurance. A dedicated team of faculty and students traversed northern Taiwan’s Dahan River, Xindian River, Keelung River, Tamsui River, and their estuaries by bicycle and on foot—covering a total of 283.5 kilometers and collecting nearly 800,000 liters of waste. Through these quantitative findings, the film clearly reveals the severe ecological threat posed by river garbage. The university hopes that the impact of this sustainability microfilm will awaken public awareness of river waste issues and emphasize the importance of sustainable practices.
At the ceremony, Vice President Ma remarked that sustainable development is intimately linked to our collective future. He noted that sustainability encompasses a broad and complex range of issues, and that the documentary is just the beginning. Ming Chi is committed to collaborating with industry, government, and academia to conduct regular environmental surveys and promote ongoing sustainability initiatives. The film’s award not only recognizes the hard work of the university’s team but also serves as an important encouragement for its future sustainability efforts.
