Development and Utilization of Professional English Vocabulary Teaching Materials

update date : 2024-04-08

In the fiercely competitive global landscape, the internationalization of higher education has become a prevailing trend. In order to excel, students' proficiency in foreign languages and professional English skills are indispensable factors. The Language Center has been collaborating with subject-specific English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructors from various departments in recent years. These collaborations aim to enhance students' foundational English abilities and elevate their proficiency in professional English vocabulary.

Each department provides introductory English articles related to their respective fields, which are then re-edited by professional English instructors to create suitable teaching materials for 3-week courses. These materials, categorized into beginner and advanced levels, are utilized in sophomore English courses. Over the course of approximately three weeks, ESP teaching materials are gradually integrated into sophomore English instruction. Teachers guide students from different departments to familiarize themselves with domain-specific or interdisciplinary English terminology, thereby establishing a foundation for reading professional English articles. Students learn how to acquire basic knowledge in specialized areas such as industry or technology through English and grasp essential English grammar, sentence structures, and paragraph organization commonly used in professional fields.

The Language Center introduces methods to enhance students' foundational vocabulary for workplace professionalism into the mandatory freshman and sophomore English courses. Additionally, a school-wide assessment is conducted to measure students' progress in professional vocabulary, allowing them to develop proficient learning and immediate response capabilities. This cultivates core language competencies essential for internationalization, empowering students to become professionals capable of providing specialized services in the international market.

Furthermore, to bridge theory with practical application, the Language Center collaborates with subject-specific English instructors to develop Professional English Vocabulary in Use textbooks tailored for Ming Chi University students. These textbooks are designed for the Colleges of Engineering, Environment Resources, and Management and Design. Through an industry-academia cooperation model, the "Professional English Vocabulary Platform" (iMingChi App) is established to facilitate convenient and diversified learning of professional English vocabulary.
