Finding Roots Diary - The Journey Home Umaq - Pingtung Paiwan Indigenous Cultural Learning Camp

The Indigenous Student Resource Center of Ming Chi University of Science and Technology held the "Finding Roots Diary - The Journey Home Umaq - Pingtung Paiwan Indigenous Cultural Learning Camp" from February 28 to March 3, 113 (2024). The camp visited the Sandimen Township Sandimen Tribe, as well as the Wenliao, Wangjia, and Nanhe Tribes in Laiyi Township, conducting in-depth cultural learning sessions on the North and Central Paiwan Indigenous cultures. Through this immersion, participants delved into traditional cultural domains, migration contexts, historical narratives, rituals (such as ancestral ceremonies and spirit worship), spiritual mediation, marriage customs, tribal life, and ecology. They explored aspects of Paiwan life including music and dance, cuisine, beliefs, architecture, hunting, and craftsmanship, fostering a sense of identity and belonging among students towards their own culture.

Beyond Indigenous students, the event also welcomed participation from non-Indigenous students, including those from the Han ethnicity and other diverse groups such as Vietnamese. By actively involving students in cultural experiences, the program aimed to deepen their understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. Through the exploration of cultural variances between the Central and North Paiwan tribes and diverse thematic workshops, students were encouraged to see and hear from different perspectives. Guided by tribal members and elders, they immersed themselves step by step into Paiwan cultural life, facilitating two-way exchanges and broadening cultural horizons. The knowledge gained
