Illuminating Hope and Embracing Light: Indian Student Association of Ming Chi University of Technology Host Diwali Festival to Share and Promote Their Home Culture

update date : 2024-05-01

In November, 2023, the MCUT Indian Student Association made an effort to promote multiculturalism by hosting a Diwali Festival on campus. The event showcased classical Indian dances, Bollywood performances, traditional Indian handcrafts, and Indian cuisine, presenting a vibrant and culturally rich celebration. Diwali, one of India's major festivals, symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and goodness over evil. During the event, a lamp-lighting ceremony was thoughtfully prepared. Prior to the festivities, participants, guided by representatives of the Indian students, collectively lit lamps, symbolizing the spirit of illuminating hope, embracing light, and fostering unity.

At this grand occasion, the significance and traditions of Diwali was shared and introduced to the participating audience. Mr. Gourav Agarwal, Assistant Director General of the Indian Taipei Association, was invited to provide speak. Additionally, the Taiwan Telugu Indians Cultural Sangam (TTICS) and various professional dance groups showcased splendid Indian traditional dances and popular songs. These included the classic song “Dola re dola”, a song from the 2002 Indian period romantic drama film Devdas and “Naatu Naatu” which has won the Best Original Song Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards. Authentic Indian cuisine was also provided, creating an immersive atmosphere of Indian culture. Indian students from multiple universities meticulously prepared performances, exhibiting the diversity of Indian culture.

The presence of international students from different countries enriches the MCUT campus with multiculturalism. Dr. Priya Lalwani Purswaney, the first Indian doctoral student in Taiwan, noted that Taiwan hosts nearly 3,000 Indian students annually, aspiring for enhanced cooperation between India and Taiwan. These Indian students are poised to be vital bridges for collaboration and exchange between the two countries.

As globalization progresses, this traditional Indian festival has extended worldwide, attracting an increasing number of international students to study in Taiwan. Hence, organizing the Diwali Festival provides a great opportunity for Indian students in Taiwan to share their customs and culture with Taiwanese and international students. The event aims to acquaint more individuals with the uniqueness of Indian culture. Ming Chi University of Technology pledges to continue organizing local international exchange activities to enhance campus multicultural vibrancy and richness.
