Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) has long been committed to University Social Responsibility (USR) and sustainable development, leveraging interdisciplinary expertise to address social and environmental challenges. In 2026, MCUT achieved another outstanding accomplishment at the 2026 Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards (TSAA). The university received two Gold Awards for “Cross-Sectoral Collaborative Governance of the Tamsui River Basin” and “Turning into Light: Vocational Empowerment and Transformation,” a Silver Award for “Green for Good: Sustainable Momentum,” and a Bronze Award for “Blue Tide Culture: International Place-Making.” With a total of two Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze Award, MCUT demonstrated its remarkable achievements in advancing sustainable development and fulfilling university social responsibility.

The 2026 TSAA attracted 545 sustainability action projects submitted by 264 organizations, making the competition highly competitive. MCUT distinguished itself among numerous outstanding entries, winning four awards. President Thu-Hua Liu represented the university at the award ceremony held at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 on the afternoon of August 27. The recognition not only highlights MCUT’s long-term commitment to sustainable development, but also demonstrates its ability to transform academic expertise and institutional resources into concrete social action.

MCUT continues to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into university development, teaching, research, and social engagement. Through USR initiatives, interdisciplinary collaboration, and industry-academia partnerships, the university actively responds to local, environmental, and social needs. The four award-winning initiatives focus respectively on river environmental governance, vocational empowerment for disadvantaged groups, ESG transformation in local industries, and cultural sustainability and international exchange, showcasing MCUT’s diverse and tangible contributions to sustainable development.

The Gold Award-winning “Cross-Sectoral Collaborative Governance of the Tamsui River Basin” focuses on environmental issues within the Tamsui River Basin and brings together university expertise, local communities, and citizen participation. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and long-term field investigations, the initiative deepens understanding of river-related environmental challenges while establishing a collaborative model that encourages diverse stakeholders to participate. Through field studies, environmental surveys, and the systematic accumulation of data, faculty and students are encouraged to engage directly with the Tamsui River Basin and take action on environmental issues, bringing the university’s expertise and capacity to bear on sustainable river governance.

The other Gold Award-winning initiative, “Turning into Light: Vocational Empowerment and Transformation,” centers on educational empowerment and social support. It helps individuals from diverse immigrant backgrounds rebuild their capabilities and confidence through professional skills training, interdisciplinary learning, and social participation, creating greater opportunities for vocational transformation and self-realization. Guided by the principle of “from receiving support to giving back,” the initiative enables participants not only to receive assistance but also to contribute to society in return, demonstrating the transformative power of education in empowering individuals and fostering social inclusion.

The Silver Award-winning “Green for Good: Sustainable Momentum” focuses on ESG implementation and sustainable transformation among industries in New Taipei City. By combining MCUT’s expertise in industrial technology, environmental sustainability, and management, the initiative helps local businesses understand and put ESG principles into practice. Through industry-academia collaboration and sustainability capacity building, enterprises are encouraged to progress from awareness to action and continuous improvement, generating new momentum for the green transformation and sustainable development of local industries.

The Bronze Award-winning “Blue Tide Culture: International Place-Making” focuses on cultural preservation, local revitalization, and international exchange. Through cross-cultural dialogue and international capacity building, the initiative seeks to rediscover and activate the value of local culture. By connecting local communities, young students, and international partners, it gives local culture new vitality through innovative interpretation and cross-border exchange, further advancing cultural sustainability and international connections.

President Thu-Hua Liu stated that receiving two Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze Award at the TSAA is not only recognition of MCUT’s long-term commitment to sustainable development and USR, but also a testament to the university’s continued efforts to transform academic expertise into meaningful social impact. Looking ahead, MCUT will continue to pursue the vision of “deepening local engagement and connecting with the international community,” integrating interdisciplinary expertise and social resources across the university to advance environmental, industrial, and cultural sustainability. The university will also continue to cultivate talents equipped with social responsibility and sustainability literacy, strengthening the role of higher education as a driving force for social innovation and sustainable development.
