MCUT Pioneers a New Model of Environmental Education with an Interdisciplinary Mixed Reality Coral Learning Toolkit

Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) has broken the traditional framework of students conducting capstone projects within a single discipline by promoting interdisciplinary collaboration between faculty and students. The university emphasizes the formation of project teams composed of members from different departments and colleges to engage in in-depth cooperative research on cross-departmental, industry-related practical issues.

A collaborative team of faculty and students from the Department of Industrial Design and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MCUT jointly planned and developed a coral education toolkit centered on Mixed Reality (MR) technology. This toolkit aims to enhance the effectiveness of environmental education and inspire students to care about marine ecological conservation.

The interdisciplinary project, titled “SAVING CORALS WITH MR,” combines the aesthetics and user experience expertise of industrial design with the technical support of mechanical engineering. Together, they successfully developed a feature-rich and educationally meaningful product. The toolkit emphasizes both fun and educational value in its design, incorporates eco-friendly concepts by using recyclable materials, and utilizes MR technology to immerse students in learning about marine ecosystems. Participating students faced multiple challenges, including market research, concept design, 3D modeling, material testing, and prototype development. Through these experiences, students not only deepened their understanding of interdisciplinary knowledge integration and application, but also developed creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

This interdisciplinary project demonstrates MCUT’s ambition in promoting cross-disciplinary education and technological integration. It also marks the beginning of a new model in environmental education, enabling a deeper understanding of marine conservation and encouraging active participation in environmental protection through innovative educational tools.
