Ming Chi University of Technology Soars in 2023 THE World University Impact Rankings! Achieving Global Rank of 401-600!

Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) has achieved a significant milestone in the latest 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Rankings. The university is ranked globally between the 401st and 600th positions, marking a proud moment for the institution. Out of 47 Taiwanese universities featured in these rankings, MCUT holds the 14th place nationally. It ranks 4th among technological universities across Taiwan and is the top-ranked private technological university. This achievement places MCUT in close company with institutions like National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, and National Taipei University of Technology. It also stands on par with National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Chung Hsing University, and National Taiwan Normal University. This prestigious ranking is a testament to MCUT’s global recognition for its excellence in teaching, research, and societal impact.

 

Dr. Thu-Hua Liu, President of MCUT, noted that the “Impact Rankings” by THE are unique as they are the only global university rankings based on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2023 rankings underscore MCUT's global competitiveness, particularly in SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), with the university placing between 101st and 200th in both categories. Additionally, the school ranks between 201st and 300th in SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), reflecting its notable contributions to these specific UN SDGs.

 

SDG 8: Empowering Students through the Internship System

Dr. Sheng-Ji Chen, Director of the Office of Research and Development, MCUT, emphasized the value of students collaborating with diverse industries for year-long practical internships in their junior year. This experience fosters a diligent work ethic, hands-on skills, and problem-solving capabilities, equipping students to embark on their career paths with responsibility and ambition. Notably, over 30% of interns earn commendations from their supervisors, and 88% fulfill the needs of their companies. Many graduates are welcomed back to their original internship companies, with some forging connections with Fortune 500 and leading semiconductor firms. The university also champions corporate-funded internships, enhancing employment prospects and achieving a post-graduation employment rate of over 90%.

 

SDG 11: Reviving and Promoting Indigo Dyeing Culture

Dr. Jau-Rong Chen, from the Department of Business Administration, explored long-term collaborations with the San Chiao Yung Culture Association and local artisans. Utilizing design thinking and business innovation models, they aim to rejuvenate, preserve, and promote the indigo dyeing culture of Sanxia. By conducting workshops and engaging local artisans, association members, and residents, they gain insights into local resources and needs, while delving into the allure of Sanxia’s indigo dyeing culture and arts. This partnership nurtures creativity, establishes sustainable business models, and contributes to social and cultural innovation, local industry growth, and job creation.

 

SDG 9 Highlight: High Energy Density and Safe Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Director Chun-Cheng Yang of the Battery Research Center of Green Energy mentioned the successful development of a solid-state flexible NCM811/HSE/Li lithium battery. The battery's anode and cathode surfaces were modified, and its mechanical strength was enhanced, lithium-ion conductivity improved, interface impedance reduced, and lithium dendrite deposition suppressed, thanks to a special electrolyte membrane structure. This solid-state lithium battery achieves an energy density of 300Wh per kilogram, surpassing the current best liquid lithium-ion batteries by 50%. The technology, which has applied for 7 multinational invention patents, also enables collaborations with renowned enterprises for technology transfer. It can be further applied to next-generation high energy density lithium-air and lithium-sulfur batteries, as well as in the areas of supercapacitors, flexible miniature batteries, and lithium-ion capacitors, catering to the future needs of portable electronic devices.

 

Dr. Cherng-Min Ma, Vice President of MCUT, also Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized that the school’s excellent performance in SDG 8, 11, and 9 not only shines in the global rankings but also stands out among domestic universities. The university is committed to further promoting SDGs, making significant contributions to academic research, education, and social services.
